Market Wisdom has three different sections: The SL50 list, The Long-Term Model Portfolio, and Swing Trading ideas. Each section has a completely different set of rules to follow. You could divide your capital and pursue each of those 3 options or focus on the one that best fits your goals. It all depends on how active you want to be and how much money you want to dedicate.

The main purpose of the SL50 list is to generate high-probability investment ideas. It helps you to find 7-8 stocks that are likely to outperform substantially in the next 3-10 weeks or more. The list is designed for long-term trend-followers and position traders alike, but it is often used by swing traders as well.

The list is updated once a week. Some of the stocks will spend 2-3 weeks on the list; others will stay multiple months; some more than a year. We announce all changes on the list every weekend – which stocks will be added and which will be removed.

Since its inception in 2010, the SL50 list has managed to identify and ride almost every major market winner. It has been an indispensable idea generation tool in our own approach to the market. We believe it could be extremely useful to you too.

Take a look at the slideshow from my presentation at Stocktoberfest 2013. It explains why the SL50 list is different than any other list and how you could benefit from it.

Stocks move in quick momentum bursts of 5% to 40% before they consolidate through time or reverse. The purpose of swing trading is to capture those 3 to 10-day moves. Every daily review that we share during the week is dedicated to swing trading ideas. We focus on stocks with high industry relative strength, high 3-12 month momentum and recent IPOs. Why? After studying thousands of stocks that moved more than 10% in a 3 to 10-day horizon, we found that a large portion of those stocks possessed at least one of those 3 characteristics.
Every week we provide between 2 and 5 swing trade setups. Depending on the market environment, there will be weeks when all setups trigger; there will also be weeks when no setups trigger.

Every idea comes with a comprehensive plan how to execute it. We provide trigger levels, stop levels, sell targets, and suggest position sizing depending on the market conditions (risk is anywhere between 0.5% and 1% of capital per idea).

The Long-term Model Portfolio is designed for busy people who don’t have the time to follow the market every day, as well as active investors who would like to follow our investing process and profit. In this section, we share position trades and long-term investments with clear reasoning behind our decisions. We focus on the trends that resonate strongest with us and those in which we understand the catalysts for positive surprises.

Every buy/sell signal is given one day in advance in a post titled “Model Portfolio Update”. We will hold up to 8 high-conviction concentrated positions, depending on the market conditions and the availability of setups we like. The typical position will be allocated between 7% and 15% of capital.

There will be months when we won’t be very active and we will primarily wind down current positions. On the other hand, there will be months when we will be super aggressive and have 3-4 new positions in a few weeks that will put us close to being fully invested. It all depends on the market environment and the opportunities that show up.

When Do We Sell In the Model Portfolio

Market trends never change directly from an uptrend to downtrend – there’s always a distinct period of distribution that gives us enough time to raise cash.
Here is what we do when volatility and correlation rise:
1) We raise cash as naturally we get stopped out in some of our long positions
2) We continue to take perfect long setups, but we use a lot smaller position sizing (1/3 to 1/2)
3) If there are very good risk to reward short setups, we take them for a quick trade (shorts are never an investment)

Basically, we do a lot less, keep more cash, minimize the draw-down in our capital, and continually scan for the next market leaders so we can take full advantage of them when the market starts to recover. We love corrections because they allow many stocks to build new bases and make spotting the future market leaders a lot easier.
Corrections make bulls a lot of money – most of them just don’t know it at the time. Many of the best risk/reward entries in momentum stocks appear after a >10% correction in the general market.
